What You Need to Know

Scammers are now using AI-generated voices to make robocalls that convincingly impersonate Walmart employees, claiming a fraudulent $919.45 charge for a PlayStation 5. These calls create urgency by warning victims to “press 1” or call back immediately to cancel the order. Once connected, a live scammer poses as customer support and requests personal information—often a Social Security number—under the pretense of identity verification. Because caller ID can be easily spoofed, the call may appear to come directly from Walmart, making the scam especially believable and dangerous.

What You Should Do

Protect yourself by treating all unexpected robocalls as suspicious, especially those involving urgent charges or refunds. Never provide personal or financial information over the phone, regardless of how legitimate the caller sounds.

If you’re concerned the call might be real, hang up and contact the company directly using a verified number from an official website or receipt—never the number provided in the call. For Walmart-related concerns, customers should call 1-800-925-6278 (1-800-WALMART). Staying calm, slowing down, and verifying independently are the most effective defenses against AI-powered phone scams.
